Great Northern Honey Co.

A word from Dave and Amy Hooks, owners of Great Northern Honey Co. ...

Our story began in college when Dave took a beekeeping class and began keeping bees. Then in 2006 he decided he wanted to become a full-time beekeeper so he and his Dad drove to California and bought 48 bee hives.  Every year we have worked to grow our hive numbers to a more sustainable level. We have done this by dividing our hives a little each year while maintaining the health of each hive. Currently we maintain a steady 2000 hives. We are beekeepers because we enjoy being stewards of land and animals. We strive to be the best beekeepers we can with the knowledge of the the significance of the Honey Bee.

Our bees are a genetic mix of European and Russian Honey Bees. We manage our colonies to be as genetically diverse as possible and raise many of our own queens. We work to keep each hive as healthy as possible and we are deliberate and diligent in learning about honey bee health. We keep our bees in several locations in northwest Montana. The wide open landscape and diverse plant populations provide good forage for the bees. We visit each of our bee yards at least once every two weeks to check on the bees and since this is northwest Montana, we are always concerned about predators such as skunks and bears.

Our Honey is made in various locations in the Flathead Valley. The Honey that we sell locally comes from Whitefish, Columbia Falls and Bigfork. The type of honey our bees make is called “Wildflower Honey” because it is made from the nectar of various species of plants.
Our honey is pure honey, minimally heated and minimally strained with absolutely nothing added.

A few words about "Raw Honey" ...
Currently there is no single definition for "Raw" honey.  Some consider honey "Raw" only when it is in the comb (not extracted), with absolutely no heating, straining or filtering. Some consider honey "Raw" if it has only been heated to below 110 degrees and has not been strained and yet others consider it "Raw" if it has not been heated above 140 degrees. We heat our honey to 115-120 degrees and the honey is minimally strained.  Studies show that with minimal heating (115-120 degrees) and minimal straining, honey will maintain minirals, vitamins, antioxidants, small amounts of pollen and some but not all of the enzymes.
